Iran slams EU, UK sanctions on individuals, entities

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has described sanctions by the European Union and Britain on some Iranian individuals and entities as unfounded, illegal, and interventionist.

Kanaani said on Tuesday that it seems that the European sides’ habit of imposing sanctions caused isolation of their rationality, and that with such a wrong attitude, this is Europe that narrows its circle of interaction.

The Islamic Republic relies on its national might and unique experiences in facing such challenges and it will react based on its national interests, he said, adding that Iran will reserve the right to respond to such vain and unconstructive measures.

In a Monday meeting in Brussels, foreign ministers from 27 member states of the European Union ratified a new package of sanctions, targeting 29 individuals and three entities in Iran.

The new sanctions freeze assets of those individuals and entities as well as prohibit European companies and citizens from any financial exchanges with the sanctioned Iranians.

The EU named the individuals as heads of provincial headquarters of the Iranian police and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) plus some commanders of army and police and the interior minister as well as the Press TV network.

Thus, the number of sanctioned Iranian individuals and entities sanctioned by the EU reaches 126 and 11 respectively.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell claimed that the bloc imposes more sanctions on those who are responsible for repressing Iranian protestors.

At the same time, Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office issued a statement to impose sanctions on Iran’s minister of telecommunications, interior minister and some figures from the IRGC and police.

The Islamic Republic of Iran warned the West that such meddling approaches would bring about repercussions and Tehran would not leave such measures unanswered.
